Overview 2023 Chevrolet Traverse
The Chevrolet Traverse is a decent three-row family SUV that offers spacious seating, ample cargo space, attractive styling, and a surprising sense of athleticism despite its size. It is powered by GM’s lively 3.6-liter V-6 engine, which is paired with a smooth-shifting nine-speed automatic transmission and can be equipped with either front- or all-wheel drive.
While the pricing and interior materials of the base LS model are appropriate, the lack of premium-quality furnishings and finishes becomes more noticeable as you upgrade to higher trim levels. In comparison, rivals in the segment, such as the Kia Telluride, provide a more luxurious experience with better cabin materials and overall interior execution. Other vehicles in this diverse segment, like the Ford Bronco, offer superior off-road capability and a more stylish presence. Additionally, options like the Jeep Grand Cherokee L can be customized to provide both luxury and capability.
Considering these factors, we have ranked the Traverse as 25th out of the 27 mid-size SUVs in this competitive segment.
After receiving a refresh in 2022, the Chevy Traverse receives a few minor updates for the 2023 model year. Firstly, two new colors are introduced: Sterling Gray Metallic and Radiant Red Tintcoat. Furthermore, certain trim levels of the three-row SUV now come with a wrapped steering wheel instead of the standard urethane unit.

Performance of the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse
Under the hood, the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse comes with a powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers a smooth and responsive driving experience. With 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, this SUV can confidently handle daily commutes and highway cruising. The Traverse also offers impressive fuel efficiency, thanks to its start-stop technology and available nine-speed automatic transmission.
The Traverse is equipped with a standard 310-horsepower V-6 engine that provides ample power, and its nine-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and discreetly. In our previous test, we found that the V-6 engine delivers strong performance, making the Traverse one of the quicker options in its class. A recent test of the Traverse RS model showcased impressive acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and completing a quarter-mile in 15.1 seconds, matching the performance of the award-winning Kia Telluride.
Inside the cabin, the Traverse offers an exceptionally quiet environment, so much so that you may need to check the tachometer to confirm whether the engine is running when stopped at a red light. The automatic stop/start feature is seamlessly integrated, adding to the overall refinement of the vehicle. At low speeds or during parking maneuvers, the Traverse feels as large as it is. However, as you pick up speed, the Traverse exhibits a sense of agility that belies its size. The steering requires minimal effort but is precise, allowing for easy maneuvering of this large SUV. The suspension of the Traverse strikes a good balance between handling and ride comfort.
If you judge the Traverse solely based on its class-average EPA-estimated fuel economy numbers, you would be missing important information. In our real-world testing on the highway at 75 mph, the all-wheel-drive Traverse High Country achieved an impressive fuel economy of 27 mpg, which is among the best in its class. On the other hand, the all-wheel-drive Traverse RS, also tested under the same conditions, returned 22 mpg, falling short of its EPA estimate by 3 mpg.
Front-wheel drive models of the Traverse have EPA ratings of 18 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while models with all-wheel drive have slightly lower ratings of 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. For more detailed information about the Traverse’s fuel economy, you can visit the EPA’s website.
Safety Features of the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse
When it comes to safety, the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse leaves no stone unturned. It comes equipped with an array of advanced driver-assistance features, including Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Rear Vision Camera, and more. The available Safety Alert Seat provides haptic feedback to alert drivers of potential hazards, further enhancing safety on the road.
Regrettably, the Chevrolet Traverse only offers the most advanced driver-assistance features, such as adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera, on the two highest-priced trims. In comparison, some competitors include these features as standard across their lineup.
For additional details about the Traverse’s crash-test results, you can visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Key safety features of the Traverse include standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and available adaptive cruise control.

With its competitive pricing and impressive list of features, the 2023 Chevrolet Traverse offers excellent value for money. Starting at an affordable base price, it provides a compelling option in the midsize SUV segment. When considering its spacious interior, advanced safety features, and robust performance, the Traverse stands out as a smart investment.
LS
|
$35,915 |
LT | $38,440 |
RS | $46,440 |
Premier | $48,595 |
High Country | $53,395 |
We recommend the base LS trim level of the Traverse because it offers excellent value for those looking for a three-row family vehicle. It comes with standard features such as LED headlights with automatic high-beams, heated side mirrors, three months of SiriusXM Radio, a generous 10 cupholders, and a suite of driver-assistance features including automated emergency braking.
Those who desire additional luxurious comforts like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a Bose 10-speaker sound system, a power-adjustable passenger’s seat, or a power rear liftgate will need to upgrade to the LT trim and pay extra for these options. The Premier or High Country models offer these features as standard, but we believe that other SUVs in this price range offer a more premium experience.
