Overview 2023 GMC Hummer EV
A brand-new Hummer is something we never thought we’d see on American roads again, but the off-road brand was reborn last year as an electric pickup truck called the GMC Hummer EV. This version is not a feeble economy-minded model. It’s powered by a 1000-hp electric powertrain, can accelerate to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds, and can confidently navigate through any terrain.
Thanks to a rear-wheel steering system, the Hummer EV can more easily maneuver around obstacles—whether they are boulders or hatchbacks—and it can even drive sideways using its innovative Crab driving mode. While rivals such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T offer a more traditional pickup truck practicality, the Hummer EV is more of a toy than a tool. An SUV version of the Hummer EV will be launched next, and more utilitarian EV pickups from GMC and sister-brand Chevrolet are also planned.
For its second year on the market, the GMC Hummer EV SUT pickup truck offers a range of new exterior colors, such as Afterburner Tintcoat, Meteorite Metallic, Void Black, Tide Metallic, and Deep Aurora Metallic. This is a change from last year when GMC only offered the Edition 1 model, which was available in Interstellar White. Now that the Edition 1 model has completed its production cycle, the Hummer EV3X takes its place as the top trim level. Unlike the fully loaded Edition 1, the Hummer EV3X can now be customized with or without removable roof panels and many of the Edition 1’s standard off-roading equipment.
Design and Exterior of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
The design of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV is a perfect blend of ruggedness and modernity. With its bold and muscular stance, the Hummer EV demands attention on and off the road. The front fascia features a prominent grille with an illuminated GMC logo, giving it a distinct look. The LED headlights and fog lights add to the aggressive appeal while providing excellent visibility in all conditions.
Moving to the sides, you’ll notice the massive 35-inch all-terrain tires that are perfectly complemented by flared wheel arches. The high ground clearance allows for easy maneuvering over any terrain. The removable roof panels offer an open-air experience, making this electric vehicle perfect for adventure seekers.
At the rear, the Hummer EV showcases a full-width LED taillight bar, adding to its modern aesthetic. The tailgate features a multi-functional power-operated design, allowing for easy loading and unloading of cargo. Overall, the design of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV exudes power and sophistication.
It is undeniable that the new Hummer EV has a much neater and more modern appearance than before thanks to its inspiration from spaceships. However, the car still retains the bold, aggressive look that made a name for itself.
If you learn about space travel. Customers will easily recognize the Hummer EV’s grille with a design quite similar to the “Sea of Tranquility” area on the moon. This was once the landing site of the Apollo 11 spacecraft.
Connected is a super-slim horizontal LED headlight cluster that matches the radiator grille. This design also helps emphasize the width of the Hummer EV. The front bumper area is huge and equipped with a large protective plate to help ensure safety during off-road situations.
Moving to the side, the Hummer EV looks like a formidable off-roader with its tall wheel wells. Comes with an optional set of Goodyear Wrangler All Territory MTs tires up to 35 inches thick or 37 inches thick, specialized for off-road use. Meanwhile, the 17-inch wheels are designed with reinforced beadlock structure.
If you choose the Edition 1 version, the car body will be equipped with foot steps that not only make getting on/off easier but also protect the car body. It is expected that this year, the footstool will have the ability to automatically slide in/out.
Seen from the back, the Hummer EV stands out with its rectangular vertical LED taillights and unique hollow interior structure instead of being divided into 3 floors like other pickup models. For customers who often go on picnics, loading/unloading goods will become very simple compared to the MultiPro Tailgate multi-function tailgate.
Specifically, the Hummer EV’s rear cargo door has up to 6 different customizable modes. Typically, it lowers to carry long items or lowers to act as steps to get into/out of the tub.

Interior Comfort of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
Stepping inside the Hummer EV, you’ll be greeted by a spacious and luxurious cabin that showcases meticulous craftsmanship. The seats are upholstered in premium leather, providing both comfort and durability. The cabin is thoughtfully designed, offering ample headroom and legroom for all occupants.
The driver-centric cockpit features a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen display that seamlessly integrates with the digital instrument cluster. This intuitive interface provides access to a plethora of features, including navigation, entertainment, climate control, and vehicle settings.
The Hummer EV also offers a wide range of advanced comfort features such as heated and ventilated seats, a premium audio system, ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. Whether you’re embarking on an off-road adventure or cruising on the highway, the interior of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Although it is a pickup model focused on optimizing off-road capabilities, the Hummer EV’s cabin looks very modern and futuristic. Classic details have been completely removed.
Most notable are the two huge screens including a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a 13.4-inch touch entertainment screen. Both have sharp display capabilities and create extremely strong visual effects.
The driver’s left foot placement is a detail that few people pay attention to but is subtle. According to the manufacturer, this detail is inspired by the shape of astronauts’ shoe prints left on the moon.
What makes the Hummer EV different from other pickup models on the market is its removable roof system.
Specifically, the hood is divided into 4 independent panels that can be easily removed and placed neatly inside the front luggage compartment. Thereby helping users immerse themselves in nature on picnics.
If you want to see the night sky without removing the roof, Hummer EV can also pamper customers with the Infinity Roof glass ceiling option.
Performance and Powertrain of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
One of the most impressive aspects of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV is its exceptional performance capabilities. This electric beast is powered by GM’s Ultium platform, which combines advanced battery technology with cutting-edge electric drivetrain components.
The Hummer EV boasts three electric motors that deliver a mind-boggling 1,000 horsepower and an astounding 11,500 lb-ft of torque. This jaw-dropping power enables the Hummer EV to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just under 3 seconds, placing it in the league of supercars.
Furthermore, the Hummer EV features GM’s innovative e4WD system that provides independent torque control to each wheel. This ensures maximum traction and stability, even in challenging off-road conditions. The adaptive air suspension system further enhances the vehicle’s off-road capabilities by adjusting the ride height for optimal ground clearance.
Currently, the only available powertrain option for the Hummer EV is a configuration with three electric motors that deliver 1000 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard, and in our testing, we found that the Hummer EV accelerated to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds, thanks to its Watts to Freedom launch control driving mode. While we were impressed with its acceleration, we were disappointed with its braking performance.
Bringing the Hummer EV to a complete stop from 70 mph required an unusually long distance of 211 feet, and repeated tests revealed noticeable brake fade. This is concerning. At low speeds, maneuverability is better than expected, thanks to the rear-wheel-steering system. However, once you reach higher speeds, the Hummer EV can be challenging to handle, much like other elevated vehicles.
The EPA fuel economy estimates for the Hummer EV are 51 MPGe in the city, 43 MPGe on the highway, and 47 MPGe combined. In comparison, the Rivian R1T is rated at 74 MPGe in the city, 66 MPGe on the highway, and 70 MPGe combined. For further details regarding the Hummer EV’s fuel economy, please refer to the EPA’s website.

Range and Charging of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
Range anxiety is a thing of the past with the 2023 GMC Hummer EV. Equipped with a massive 200 kWh Ultium battery pack, this electric vehicle offers an estimated range of over 350 miles on a single charge. Whether you’re planning a long road trip or daily commutes, the Hummer EV has you covered.
In terms of charging, the Hummer EV supports both DC fast charging and Level 2 AC charging. With DC fast charging capabilities, you can replenish approximately 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Additionally, GMC offers a range of home charging solutions that allow you to conveniently charge your Hummer EV overnight.
The Hummer EV is equipped with a 205.0-kWh battery pack and boasts an estimated driving range of 329 miles per charge. However, in our own testing, we observed a range of 290 miles during an all-highway range test at a speed of 75 mph. The Hummer EV utilizes an 800-volt electrical architecture with 350-kilowatt fast-charging capability, allowing GMC to claim that it can add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
For buyers who do not have access to DC fast charging stations, the Hummer EV can also be charged at regular public charging terminals or at home using the provided adapter. However, it is important to note that charging times are significantly slower in these situations.
Off-Road Capabilities of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
The 2023 GMC Hummer EV is not just a powerful electric vehicle; it is also a formidable off-road machine. Designed to conquer any terrain, this beast comes equipped with a range of off-road features that ensure unrivaled performance.
One standout feature is the Extract Mode, which raises the suspension by approximately six inches to provide additional ground clearance. This allows you to navigate over rocks, boulders, and other obstacles with ease.
The Hummer EV also features front and rear e-Lockers that provide enhanced traction by locking both wheels on an axle simultaneously. Additionally, underbody armor protects critical components while skid plates safeguard against damage during challenging off-road adventures.
Speaking of towing and payload, GMC says the Hummer EV can tow up to 7500 pounds. That’s less than the towing capacities of other EV pickups such as the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, which are rated for 11,000 pounds and 10,000 pounds respectively. During our towing test pulling a 6100-pound double-axle camping trailer, the range of our Hummer EV dropped to just 140 miles at 70 mph.
Dangerous and rough roads are Hummer EV’s favorite “food” when the vehicle is equipped with CrabWalk mode, allowing the vehicle to crawl sideways like a crab, as the name suggests.
Specifically, this mode can adjust both front and rear wheels with a maximum tilt angle of 10 degrees. From there, the car can wriggle through difficult areas without having to waste time adjusting the angle forward/backward.
Drivers are also more confident when going off-road when Hummer EV is integrated with up to 18 surveillance cameras, including 2 cameras installed under the vehicle. According to an announcement from GM, the Hummer EV’s suspension system has an operating travel of up to 330 mm, helping the vehicle to quickly adapt to all complex terrain conditions.
Technology and Connectivity of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
The 2023 GMC Hummer EV is packed with state-of-the-art technology that enhances both convenience and safety. The large infotainment touchscreen display supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, allowing seamless smartphone connectivity.
The Hummer EV also features an advanced driver-assistance system that includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. These safety features work together to provide a safe driving experience both on and off the road.
Furthermore, the Hummer EV offers over-the-air updates, ensuring that your vehicle’s software stays up to date with the latest enhancements and features.
The Hummer EV features a large 13.4-inch display for the infotainment system, accompanied by a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. GMC has partnered with Epic Games, the creator of the popular Fortnite video game, to design the graphics for the Hummer EV’s infotainment interface.
The high-resolution screen and visually appealing graphics are impressive, but we did notice some noticeable lag that suggests the system may not have sufficient processing power to keep up with the software’s capabilities. The vehicle comes equipped with a range of connectivity features as standard, including Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and GM’s OnStar telematics system.
Safety of the 2023 GMC Hummer EV
GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving mode is a standard feature, and we have found that it works quite well. Additionally, less advanced features like lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring are also included. To learn more about the Hummer EV’s crash-test results, you can visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites.
Some key safety features include standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection, standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and standard adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode.
When it comes to the safety system of the GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck, the UltraVision camera cannot be ignored. This camera system will give you 18 different views in every position, even with virtual detectors and underbody cameras. Therefore, obstacles on the road will no longer be a worry.
If the terrain is complex and rough, you can raise the vehicle to 149mm with the Extract Mode adaptive suspension system. Durable tires, not afraid of obstacles appearing on the road. Multi-point seat belts protect you and your passengers in the most optimal way against adverse situations.
