Overeview of the 2024 Volvo XC90
The second-generation Volvo XC90 continues to age gracefully. Despite entering its ninth model year, the 2024 XC90 remains one of the sharpest-looking mid-size luxury SUVs on the market. The same applies to the XC90’s cabin, which benefits from a simple yet modern interior design complemented by rich material choices. Cushy seats and ample space make the Volvo a comfortable place to spend long drives. However, the third row is a bit tight, so full-size passengers may prefer to sit elsewhere.
Three powertrains are available, with power ranging from as little as 247 horsepower in entry-level B5 form to as much as 455 horsepower in plug-in hybrid Recharge guise. The latter is also capable of driving up to 36 miles on battery power alone. Of course, the XC90 has its flaws. Both its small dashboard display screen and cumbersome touchscreen infotainment controls may leave some buyers wanting more. However, overall, the strengths of this Swedish SUV outweigh its weaknesses. The 2024 Volvo XC90 may not be the best vehicle in its segment, which includes heavy hitters such as the Porsche Cayenne, BMW X5, Genesis GV80, and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class. Nevertheless, it is good enough to deserve a spot on your mid-size luxury SUV shortlist.
The 2024 Volvo XC90 is mostly a carryover model. However, Volvo has made a few small changes to the SUV’s features and options menus. The most notable change is the removal of the Dark theme and its black exterior trim pieces, while the Bright theme with its chrome bits remains available. Other updates include standard laminated side windows on the top-spec Ultimate trim and the introduction of a new 22-inch wheel and tire package for the turbocharged and supercharged XC90 B6 Ultimate.

Exterior Design of the 2024 Volvo XC90
The 2024 Volvo XC90 boasts a captivating exterior design that effortlessly blends elegance with a touch of ruggedness. Its bold lines and sculpted curves create a dynamic silhouette that turns heads on the road. The signature Thor’s Hammer LED headlights and sleek grille add an air of sophistication to the front fascia. The XC90’s aerodynamic design not only enhances its visual appeal but also improves fuel efficiency.
The sharp design and decisive lines that make up the identity of Volvo cars are still promoted in the XC90. The car has “3-round measurements” of 4,950 x 1,958 x 1,776mm (LxWxH), providing the ability to move flexibly in the inner city while still ensuring spaciousness for the passenger compartment. The car has 4 color options including Black, red, blue, white.
The prominent grille with the crossed Volvo logo and vertical chrome-plated slats exudes sophistication and luxury. Painted in the same color as the grille, there is also a spoiler on the front bumper, creating a uniform appearance with a classic Scandinavian style.
Another “specialty” of the Volvo family is the headlight cluster that comes with daytime LED strips inspired by Thor’s hammer. The car’s headlights are integrated with automatic light adjustment and a modern high-pressure lamp washing system.
Exquisite body design with embossed ribs running along the sides creates a gentle highlight. The door edges are surrounded by slender chrome strips, further enhancing the inherently sleek appearance.
The most impressive thing about the car’s body is the large 19-21 inch wheels that emphasize the imposing body of the 7-seat SUV. In particular, the sporty R-Design version also has the option of 22-inch wheels with performance tires.
The rear of the car is somewhat larger than the front and has an imposing appearance. Attracting the most attention is the unique L-shaped thick taillight cluster, hugging both sides of the rear corner of the car. The spoiler with integrated brake lights gives it a sporty feel. The pair of angular parallelogram-shaped exhaust pipes is also a common design on models from the Nordic brand.

Interior Comfort and Luxury of the 2024 Volvo XC90
Step inside the 2024 Volvo XC90, and you will be greeted by a luxurious and spacious cabin that ensures a comfortable ride for all occupants. The premium materials used throughout the interior exude a sense of refinement, while the ergonomic seats provide excellent support during long journeys. The XC90’s three-row seating configuration allows for ample legroom and headroom, ensuring everyone can relax and enjoy the ride.
The interior of the XC90 is a masterpiece, with an attractive design and high-quality materials. We would like to see more vehicles like this. However, adults may not be pleased with the third row, especially on long journeys. The wide, boxy silhouette of the XC90 is beneficial for carrying cargo, but the interior compartments are not as spacious as those in some competing vehicles.
Scandinavian design style continues to “bring soul” to the interior with Driftwood wood paneling details only found in Northern European old forests. The mechanical buttons are largely simplified because users can use most of the car’s features through the 9-inch vertical central touch screen.
The new generation XC90 still uses a 3-spoke multi-function leather-wrapped steering wheel and a 12.3-inch digital clock cluster to provide an enjoyable driving experience. All rows of seats are upholstered in faux leather, Nappa leather and have the option of wool-blend upholstery.
The Momentum version is equipped with integrated heated front seats and memory for the driver’s seat. Meanwhile, R-Design has sporty-designed front seats with built-in heating and thigh cushion extensions to create a soft feeling.
The front seats in the Inscription variant feature heating, ventilation, side adjustment and also add thigh cushion extension. In particular, the passenger seat in the Inscription version also has a seat memory setting feature.
Cutting-Edge Technology of the 2024 Volvo XC90
Volvo has equipped the 2024 XC90 with an array of cutting-edge technology features that enhance both convenience and safety. The large touchscreen infotainment system serves as the control center for various functions, including navigation, audio, and smartphone integration. The XC90 also incorporates advanced driver-assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring, making every drive safer and more enjoyable.
A stylish, tablet-like 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes standard in all XC90 models. Every model is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is available as an option. However, the functionality of the system could notably be improved with additional redundant hard buttons and more intuitive on-screen controls.
Volvo XC90 2024 Momentum version has amenities including panoramic sunroof, 4-zone automatic climate control, 9-inch central touch screen connecting Apple Carplay and Android Auto, navigation system, sound system 10-speaker bar (with optional 14-speaker Harman Kardon system) and wireless charging dock.
With the R-Design sports version, the car will be equipped with a rear sunshade, illuminated door sills, ambient interior lighting and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system. In addition, customers can also spend more money to upgrade to a high-end 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
With the Inscription variant, amenities on the XC90 will include illuminated door sills, ambient interior lighting, rear sunshades and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon system.
Ride and Handling of the 2024 Volvo XC90
Despite its size, the 2024 Volvo XC90 handles like a much smaller vehicle, providing a smooth and composed ride. The suspension system effectively absorbs road imperfections, ensuring a comfortable experience for both the driver and passengers. The precise steering and well-tuned chassis contribute to the XC90’s agility, making it enjoyable to maneuver through city streets or tackle winding roads.
Even the B5 and B6 powertrains receive assistance from a 48-volt electric motor. B5 models are equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 247 horsepower. Moving up to the B6 powertrain, which is available on Plus and comes standard on Ultimate trim levels, increases the power output to 295 horsepower. The XC90 Recharge, a plug-in hybrid with 455 horsepower, is the most powerful option in the lineup. Regardless of the trim level or powertrain, all XC90 models come with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. During our test at the track, the Recharge accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds.
Similar to many vehicles in its class, the Volvo XC90 leans noticeably when taking curves, but its steering responses are precise and the wheel offers a satisfying balance between being too light and too heavy. Our test car was equipped with the optional air suspension, which provided a comfortable and insulated ride. It also handled most road situations well. However, there were some clattering noises from the chassis when encountering particularly sharp bumps, which was one of the few complaints we had about the otherwise elegant XC90.
Those interested in towing boats, trailers, and other recreational vehicles should be aware that not every XC90 model is capable of reaching the maximum tow rating of 5000 pounds. While every XC90 equipped with the 295-hp B6 powertrain and XC90 Recharge can tow up to 5000 pounds, XC90s with the base 247-hp B5 powertrain have a maximum towing capacity of 4000 pounds.
Safety Features of the 2024 Volvo XC90
Safety has always been a top priority for Volvo, and the 2024 XC90 is no exception. It comes packed with an extensive list of safety features designed to protect occupants and prevent accidents. The City Safety system uses radar and camera technology to detect potential collisions with pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles, automatically applying the brakes if necessary. Other notable safety features include lane-keeping aid, rear collision warning, and a comprehensive airbag system.
Volvo’s commitment to safety is well-known, and its three-row crossover is equipped with a comprehensive range of driver-assistance technologies. Fuel Efficiency and Powertrain Options of the 2024 Volvo XC90
For an SUV of its size, the 2024 Volvo XC90 offers commendable fuel efficiency across its range of powertrain options. The T5 model achieves an estimated EPA rating of around 23 mpg in combined city/highway driving conditions, making it one of the more fuel-efficient options in its class. The T8 hybrid variant offers even greater efficiency when driving in electric-only mode but still provides ample power when needed.
The 2024 Volvo XC90 offers a range of powertrain options to suit different driving preferences, whether you prioritize fuel efficiency or exhilarating performance. The base T5 engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers ample power while maintaining good fuel economy. The T6 model adds a supercharger to the T5 engine for even more spirited acceleration. For those seeking maximum performance, the T8 hybrid variant combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor, providing impressive power along with the ability to drive on pure electric mode for short distances.
With the exception of its plug-in powertrain, the XC90 achieves similar fuel economy ratings compared to many of its six-cylinder competitors. Last year, the 247-hp B5 powertrain received an EPA-estimated rating of 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway, while XC90s with the 295-hp B6 powertrain achieved ratings of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. The XC90 Recharge obtained an EPA-rated 66 MPGe, and it can travel up to 36 miles on battery power, according to the EPA. However, during our real-world highway fuel economy test at 75 mph, the XC90 Recharge fell short of its EPA rating, achieving only 58 MPGe and traveling 29 miles on battery power.
Pricing and Trim Levels of the 2024 Volvo XC90
The 2024 Volvo XC90 is available in various trim levels, allowing buyers to choose the one that best suits their preferences and budget. The base Momentum trim offers a host of standard features at an attractive price point, while the Inscription trim adds more luxurious touches and advanced technology. For those seeking sportier aesthetics and enhanced performance, the R-Design trim is the ideal choice. Pricing ranges from competitive to premium depending on the selected trim level and optional features.
Core | $57,195 |
Plus | $61,095 |
Ultimate | $70,595 |
Recharge Core | $73,095 |
Recharge Plus | $74,795 |
Recharge Ultimate | $80,795 |
The price of the 2024 Volvo XC90 ranges from $57,195 to $80,795. Volvo offers a good amount of customization options to build the perfect XC90. However, to strike a balance between luxury, price, and power, we recommend starting with the Plus trim, choosing the optional 295-horsepower B6 powertrain, and opting for the more affordable seven-passenger bench-seat layout instead of paying extra for second-row captain’s chairs.
