Renault Clio 2023 possesses the design, performance, technology, safety features and overall driving experience of this compact car. Join us for a closer look at what makes the 2023 Renault Clio a segment game-changer.

Renault Clio – the French icon car

2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Renault Clio, the French supermini that has been one of the most successful models ever sold in Europe.

With over 15 million units produced since its first version hit the market in 1990, Clio remains an emblem of the small car segment that attracts a lot of attention from European consumers. Its existence also testifies to the long history of the French automaker.

Renault Clio I

Designed as a replacement for the highly successful Renault 5, the first-generation Clio was introduced at the 1990 Paris Motor Show.

In 1991, the car model won the title of Car of the Year in Europe, with experts considering it the best new car introduced on the continent thanks to its “impressive design, quality, spacious cabin, and unprecedented equipment for a small-sized car.”

The 1.4-liter variant of the Renault Clio is equipped with remote central locking, electric adjustable sunroof, radio, and cassette stereo. Other versions include the 1.2-liter three-door diesel engine, 1.9-liter, 1.8-liter with a 16-valve RSi engine, and the Clio Williams with a 2-liter, 148 horsepower engine.

Renault Clio II

The production of the Clio I ended in 1998 when Renault introduced the Clio II. With a new design and larger legroom, the cabin is more spacious, seats are bigger, and the suspension system is adjusted for comfort.

By using new materials, the weight of the car has been reduced, with certain parts such as the hood made of aluminum, the front mudguard made of composite, and the headlight cover made of polycarbonate. The Clio is the first subcompact car equipped with front airbags and ABS, and it also comes with seatbelt pretensioners and power steering. The engine options include 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6-liter petrol engines, as well as a 1.9-liter diesel engine option. The sporty Clio RS version produces up to 170 horsepower. The new 1.6-liter 16-valve petrol engine was introduced in 2000, and later versions were upgraded with 16-valve engines for improved performance and fuel efficiency.

In 2000, the second generation Clio was updated with revised instrument cluster and passenger airbags as standard. In 2001, Renault added more features such as new bumpers, optional xenon headlights, digital display air conditioning system and GPS, and introduced a new 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine option. In the same year, the Clio V6 Renault Sport, a rear-wheel drive model with a mid-mounted 3.0-liter engine sourced from the Laguna factory, producing 226 horsepower, was introduced. Various styling changes were implemented from inside out in 2004, and the Clio RS received a power boost to 179 horsepower and two chassis options, standard and Cup.

Renault Clio III

In 2005, the Clio II was replaced by the Clio III. The latest version came with a sleeker design, improved interior quality, enhanced cabin space, and more features. The car featured a smart key and push-button start, along with a new GPS system and active cruise control with speed limit function.

The third generation Clio is the first supercar to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating thanks to its advanced active and passive safety features. A new version called the Sport Tourer, with a longer wheelbase than the regular hatchback, was also introduced for this launch, and a new Renault Sport variant was released with a power output of up to 197 horsepower. The Clio III was named European Car of the Year in 2006.

The engine lineup includes the regular TCe petrol and dCi diesel, while the Clio RS version comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 197 horsepower and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Renault Clio V

The Renault Clio V was introduced at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and put into production later that year. The Clio V received a five-star rating from Euro NCAP and is available with petrol and diesel engines as well as the new self-charging hybrid E-Tech drivetrain.

The latest supermini from Renault is equipped with a 9.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10-inch TFT driver information display. At the same time, the car’s interior space and convenience have been improved with the largest boot in its segment, at 391 liters.

The C has been a popular choice among car enthusiasts for years, and the 2023 model is no exception. With its sleek design and innovative features, the Clio 2023 aims to redefine the compact car market. This new iteration promises to deliver a thrilling driving experience without compromising on practicality and efficiency.

With the discontinuation of the Ford Fiesta, the competition is fierce to become the leader in the small hatchback market. This makes it the perfect time for Renault to give its popular Clio a refresh, featuring updated styling and added technology. These updates consolidate the various minor changes that have occurred in recent years. The evolution of the Clio has been gradual, rather than revolutionary, but that doesn’t mean nothing has changed.

In the past year or so, the Clio has undergone a refresh, including a new engine range that combines an updated hybrid powertrain with a small, turbocharged petrol engine. Additionally, tweaks have been made to ensure that the Clio remains enjoyable to drive. However, Renault has taken things up a notch with a new front end design and a new Esprit Alpine trim level that draws on the F1 expertise of its sister brand, Alpine. The question now is whether these updates will be enough to propel the Clio to the top of its class.

Design and Exterior of Renault Clio 2023

The Renault Clio 2024 boasts a striking design that sets it apart from its competitors. The aerodynamic lines and bold curves give the car a sporty and modern look. The front grille is sleeker and more refined, while the LED headlights add a touch of sophistication. The rear of the car features a distinctive light signature, further enhancing its visual appeal. With a range of vibrant colors to choose from, the Clio 2024 allows for personalization to suit every taste.

Renault Clio Facelift 2023 6

Compared to the old Clio, the new model doesn’t look significantly different. Yes, Renault’s new stripy logo is prominently displayed on the front, and there’s a redesigned grille, but that’s about it. Unless, of course, you choose the new Esprit Alpine trim level, which features Alpine badging on the wheels and wings, as well as sportier bumpers and wheel designs. Inside, there’s a slightly more high-tech cabin with a digital instrument display as standard, and the central touchscreen infotainment system offers a few extra features. Once again, the Esprit Alpine steals the show with its sportier cabin that includes flashy upholstery and red, white, and blue stitching.

As for the engine options, the Clio still offers the same range as before, with the addition of the E-Tech 145 Full Hybrid option alongside the small TCe 90 petrol engine. Both options are powered by petrol, but the E-Tech combines the 1.6-liter engine with the same electric motor and six-speed automatic gearbox found in the Captur and Arkana SUVs.

Although Renault has made some changes to the car’s specification, there have been no updates to the suspension or chassis. This means that the Clio is just as enjoyable to drive as before, with some of the best handling characteristics in its class, while still providing a comfortable and supple ride.

Interior and Comfort of Renault Clio 2023

Step inside the Renault Clio 2024, and you’ll be greeted by a thoughtfully designed interior that combines style and comfort. The cabin offers ample space for both the driver and passengers, making long journeys a breeze. The seats are ergonomically designed and provide excellent support, ensuring a comfortable ride even on rough terrains. The dashboard features a sleek touchscreen display that seamlessly integrates with the car’s infotainment system, putting all controls at your fingertips.

Renault Clio 1

Renault has made minimal changes to the Clio’s cabin, maintaining its basic structure. The dashboard design remains clean, with a central touchscreen and a digital instrument display, which is now a standard feature on all models. The size of the screen and instrument display may vary depending on the version chosen, but they are essentially variations of the same theme.

Performance and Efficiency of Renault Clio 2023

Under the hood, the Renault Clio 2024 houses an efficient engine that delivers an exhilarating performance. With multiple engine options available, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid, there’s a choice to suit every driver’s needs. The Clio 2024 offers responsive handling and precise steering, making it a joy to drive in both city traffic and open highways. Additionally, the hybrid variant provides excellent fuel efficiency, reducing your carbon footprint without compromising on power.

Renault Clio 2024 1280 14 800x48 1

Clio customers have a choice of two different engines. The basic option is a 1.0-litre TCe 90 turbocharged petrol engine, which delivers 95hp to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox. The other option is a 1.6-litre E-Tech Full Hybrid engine, which offers 143hp and a six-speed automatic transmission. Many people may find the hybrid option appealing due to its combination of performance and fuel efficiency. It allows for a respectable 9.3-second acceleration from 0-62mph, although it may not be particularly rapid. If you choose the TCe 90 engine, the acceleration time increases to over 12 seconds, although it is still reasonably quick.

Renault Clio 16

Regardless of the engine you choose, the Clio is surprisingly enjoyable to drive. While French cars are often known for their comfort rather than their sportiness, the Clio is an exception to this rule. It may not be as sharp as the now-discontinued Fiesta, but it has meaty steering and good body control, making it nimble in corners. However, this does come at a cost. The Clio has a slightly firmer ride compared to, for example, the Citroen C3, although it never becomes excessively uncomfortable or harsh. It is worth noting that we have not yet tested a basic Clio with the smaller 16-inch alloy wheels, which may provide a slightly smoother ride over potholes. However, for the more high-end models, there is definitely a sporty element to the ride, even if it is not as firm as that of a “hot” hatchback.

Innovative Technology of Renault Clio 2023

The Renault Clio 2024 is equipped with cutting-edge technology that enhances both convenience and safety. The car features a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, allowing you to seamlessly connect your device for music streaming, navigation, and hands-free calling. Advanced driver-assistance systems such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking provide an added layer of safety on the road.

Renault Clio 2024 1280 1b 800x48 1

Naturally, the top-spec cars with larger touchscreens and more stylish instrument clusters are the most sophisticated. The touchscreen technology is slightly above average, with a crisp screen and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay features to enhance convenience. However, the standout feature is the high-end instrument display. While it may lack some of the advanced functions found in competitor systems, it offers a clear and customizable display that provides all necessary information. Like many other cars in its class, the Clio faces tight profit margins, necessitating some cost-cutting measures. Nevertheless, the upmarket materials and straightforward solutions in the Clio’s cabin prevent these measures from being overly intrusive, and occasional scratchy plastic surfaces won’t leave you disappointed.

Safety Features of Renault Clio 2023

Safety is a top priority for Renault, and the Clio 2024 is packed with an array of safety features. The car comes equipped with multiple airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, stability control, and traction control, ensuring maximum protection for both the driver and passengers. Additionally, the Clio 2024 has received top ratings in crash tests conducted by independent safety organizations, further validating its commitment to passenger safety.

New Renault Clio 13

In terms of structure, the new Clio is identical to its predecessor, and therefore it inherits the five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating of the previous model. For a small car, it has an impressive five-star rating, with a remarkable 96% score for adult occupant protection and a commendable 89% score for child occupant protection. This places it in the same league as the renowned Volvo XC90 seven-seat SUV in terms of safety.

Additionally, the Clio is equipped with a range of safety systems to prevent accidents. Rear parking sensors are included as standard on all models, while more high-end models offer a rear-view camera and front parking sensors. Naturally, there are other safety features as well, such as autonomous emergency braking, which can automatically stop or slow down the car if the driver fails to respond to a hazard.

Pricing and Options of Renault Clio 2023

The Renault Clio 2024 provides excellent value for money in its segment. With various trim levels and customization options available, you can tailor the car to your preferences. While pricing may vary depending on the chosen specifications, the Clio 2024 remains competitive in its class, offering an affordable yet feature-packed compact car option.

Clio customers face a simple choice of three different trim levels. The entry-level Evolution model comes with 16-inch alloys and climate control, as well as rear parking sensors and a seven-inch digital instrument cluster, plus a seven-inch touchscreen. Upgrading to the mid-range Techno gets you larger alloys and some more chrome detailing on the exterior, along with a wireless charging pad, front parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

The Esprit Alpine is the range-topper, offering sportier bodywork, a heated steering wheel and heated seats, in addition to the most impressive 9.3-inch touchscreen and a larger 10-inch instrument display with satellite navigation. As usual, there’s a selection of options, including a range of paint colors, but we don’t expect to see too many choices on the list. Renault will, however, offer accessories such as floor mats and boot liners to make living with the Clio that much easier and more comfortable.

Renault Clio 2023 Review: The Future of Compact Cars

The Renault Clio 2023 is a testament to Renault’s commitment to innovation and excellence. With its striking design, advanced technology, impressive performance, and comprehensive safety features, the Clio 2024 sets a new standard for compact cars. Whether you’re a city driver seeking maneuverability or an adventurous soul craving an exhilarating ride, the Renault Clio 2023 is sure to exceed your expectations. Discover the future of compact cars with the Renault Clio 2023.

Renault Clio Facelift 2023 1

Although it’s an evolution of its predecessor rather than an all-new car, the Clio remains one of the most appealing and likeable small cars on the market. The interior quality is surprisingly good, and there’s no arguing with the boot space. However, the best thing about this car is the way it drives. It’s fun to throw around and easy to steer around town, while the peppy petrol and hybrid powertrains give it more than enough get-up-and-go. The Clio faces some serious competition in a crowded class, but it’s one of our favorites.

The Renault Clio is a stylish compact car that competes with models such as the Peugeot 208, Volkswagen Polo, and Ford Fiesta. Despite sharing a resemblance to its predecessor, the latest Clio incorporates numerous new components. While the hook-shaped headlights and sporty touches in RS Line models add flair, they may not be enough to outshine more stylish options like the 208. Fortunately, the interior of the Clio is a marked improvement. The smart and minimalist dashboard exudes a posh feel, with well-crafted materials and intuitive controls. Higher trim levels offer a portrait infotainment system with smartphone mirroring features and impressive graphics. The Clio also excels in providing ample space and seat adjustment for front passengers. Although it may not turn heads like some of its competitors, the Clio surprises with its luxurious interior for a small car.

However, the back seats are not as impressive. People who are over six feet tall will struggle with headroom, and unless you are only carrying children, using all three back seats at once is out of the question. On the bright side, the Clio offers ample space for luggage in its roomy boot, which is even more spacious than that of a VW Polo.

Once you hit the road, you’ll notice that the Renault Clio tends to exhibit some fidgeting and bouncing, especially on rough roads and in town. It’s not to say that every little imperfection will cause discomfort, but it’s certainly not as smooth as a Ford Fiesta.

The Clio also falls short in terms of visibility, with its small side windows and super-slim rear window. However, its small size, light steering, and optional 360-degree surround-view camera help alleviate the stress of parallel parking. Additionally, there is a driver assistance system available that can assist with acceleration, braking, and steering in traffic jams, but it can only be paired with Renault’s somewhat sluggish automatic gearbox. The standard manual gearbox, on the other hand, is fairly easy to use.

The Renault Clio’s economical petrol engines offer decent performance without being overly noisy or expensive to maintain. While it may not have the “wow” factor to stand out among more desirable, fun, and upscale alternatives, the Clio does make for a good all-round city car. If you prioritize easy driving, a spacious boot, and an impressively posh interior, then the Clio is definitely worth considering.

While the Clio range may not be as extensive as in previous years, there are still four available models to choose from. These range from the affordable yet well-equipped Evolution model to the sporty-looking and well-equipped R.S. Line and E-Tech engineered versions. What sets these models apart is that all of them offer a choice between a ‘normal’ petrol engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox or a more powerful (and economical, albeit more expensive) hybrid option with an automatic transmission.

Even the Evolution trim is competitively priced compared to its rivals, and it comes with standard features such as a 7.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Additionally, you’ll enjoy 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and a 7.0-inch digital driver’s display.
