Introduction

When the BMW M2 was introduced in 2015, it immediately earned a reputation as a classic. It perfectly embodied the essence of the M philosophy: powerful, compact, fast, and agile – a true car for driving enthusiasts.

Now, BMW has taken the M formula and applied it to their new 2 Series (G87), resulting in what can be argued as the most accomplished and aggressive M2 to date.

BMW’s M division has remained steadfast with the latest M2, combining a potent twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with rear-wheel drive and the option of a manual or automatic transmission. This tried-and-true recipe has been refined over time, making this car the last of its kind from BMW’s M division to be purely powered by combustion. The next M2, expected to debut in 2030 based on BMW’s usual seven-year model cycle, is likely to be electric.

As a result, this final iteration is destined to be held in high regard long after the sound of combustion is replaced by the artificial buzz and hum of electrification. Undoubtedly, all the elements for a future classic are present.

Visually, the M2 has taken on a more muscular and commanding appearance compared to its predecessor. The wheel arches have an appealingly bulging effect, accommodating 19-inch alloys at the front and 20-inch ones at the rear – the first time staggered wheel sizes are standard on an M2.

The new front and rear bumpers exude a purposeful and aggressive look, complemented by the prominent bulge on the bonnet where the heart and soul of the M2 lies.

Not only is it larger in size, but it has also been dimensionally improved. The length of the new model has increased by 114mm compared to the previous version, now measuring 4580mm. The width has also increased by 33mm, reaching 1887mm. Additionally, it sits slightly lower than the old M2 now measuring1403mm, which is 7mm lower.

The stance of the M2 has also been enhanced. The new model has a 54mm longer wheelbase, with the front track increasing by 38mm and the rear track by 4mm.

The result is an M2 that is longer, leaner, and more powerful in appearance than its predecessor. It has undeniable street appeal.

However, street appeal alone is not enough to match the revered original M2. This new model needs to surpass its predecessor in order to establish its own legacy of driver involvement.

What is the price of the BMW M2 in Australia?

With only one variant currently available, pricing for the 2023 BMW M2 is straightforward. Prices start at $121,700 before on-road costs, and buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission at no additional cost.

This represents an increase in price of $18,800 for the manual transmission and $11,800 for the automatic transmission compared to the previous generation M2. The previous-gen M2 Competition trim, in its final year (2021), was priced between $102,900 and $109,900 plus on-road costs, depending on the transmission.

Despite the price increase, the M2 remains the most affordable fully-fledged M car on the market. The entry-level M3 sedan with a manual gearbox starts at $161,300 plus on-road costs.

There are few direct competitors for the M2. Audi offers the RS3 in hatchback ($91,400) or sedan ($93,900) versions. Mercedes-AMG has the CLA45 S, starting at $128,000 plus on-road costs.

For those with a more modest budget looking for a tamer driving experience, the regular BMW M240i xDrive, which shares some components with the M2, starts at $96,000 plus on-road costs.

The new M2 in Australia comes with a generous list of standard equipment.

The highlight is undoubtedly the powerful 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine located under the bold hood. This engine is derived from its M3 and M4 counterparts but is slightly detuned to produce 338kW and 550Nm of torque. It can be paired with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels. There is no all-wheel-drive option for the M2, ensuring a pure driving experience.

Notable equipment includes adaptive LED headlights, dual interior screens, heated electric M Sport seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, a head-up display, tri-zone climate control, and a Harman Kardon surround-sound system.

Advanced driver assistance systems comprise of autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and either regular cruise control in manual models or adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go in automatic vehicles.

Customers have the option to select from a range of five colors, all included in the base price. Our test car was painted in the trendy M Brooklyn Grey shade. Additionally, there are two choices for alloy wheel designs and two interior trim color options in Vernasca leather, all at no extra cost.

The only optional feature that comes with an additional charge, and it’s a substantial one, is the M Carbon Experience priced at $14,500. This package includes lightweight M Carbon bucket seats, Merino leather upholstery, a higher top speed limit (285km/h compared to 250km/h), and vouchers for two BMW M performance driving courses.

How much space does the BMW M2 have inside?

bmw m2 2023 interior. As you open the door and enter the cabin, you’ll be welcomed by an intentionally sporty interior. The M2 is designed with the driver in mind, and this is evident in the cabin’s layout. Starting with the steering wheel, which has long been regarded as one of the best in the industry, it features a satisfyingly chunky rim that feels incredibly special to hold. The steering wheel is equipped with multifunction switches that are conveniently placed but not overwhelming. Additionally, there are two red buttons – M1 and M2 – which can be programmed to instantly switch between personalized driving modes with just a simple press.

The front seats provide excellent support in all the right areas. In our test car, we had regular seats instead of the snug, firm, and sometimes uncomfortable carbon-fiber sports seats found in the M Carbon Experience package. After experiencing the latter in an M3 recently, I found myself appreciating the more traditional and comfortable regular seats. The interior finish of the car is exactly what you would expect from a BMW – superb.

The use of high-quality materials throughout the cabin gives it a premium feel, although personally, I would have preferred straight-up black Vernasca leather instead of the Cognac color in our test car. However, different people may have different preferences. The dashboard, center console, and M steering wheel are adorned with glossy carbon fiber, adding a touch of luxury to the overall design.

One particular aesthetic highlight is the paddle-shifters on the steering wheel, which are finished in carbon fiber and accented with a vibrant red color. The ‘+” and “-” symbols on the shifters, indicating gear changes, also feature the same red color. It may be a small detail, but the attention to detail and aesthetic appeal is truly satisfying. While the M2 technically has seating for four people, the second row is best suited for short trips only. Although there has been a slight increase in legroom due to the M2’s growth spurt, it still remains tight and requires some contortion to get in and out of.

Your dignity may be left behind on the curb during this process. The boot capacity remains the same as the previous generation M2, measuring at 390L. This should be sufficient for most needs. However, it’s worth noting that there is no spare wheel included. Instead, you are provided with a tire repair kit to handle any flat tire situations until you can reach a Bob Jane T-Mart for assistance.

Does the BMW M2 support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto?

Like the other updated models in the M range, the M2 comes equipped with BMW’s latest dual-screen infotainment system. The infotainment setup consists of a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster/driver display, both housed within a single curved panel that makes a strong impression. The M2 offers both wireless and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, in addition to BMW’s own satellite navigation system.

We personally prefer using CarPlay for most tasks, and in this regard, the system performs flawlessly, quickly connecting and remaining reliable. BMW has made improvements to its operating system, which is a step up from the previous setup that was often confusing and not particularly user-friendly. However, the user experience still falls slightly short, with its multitude of screens, apps, and functions sometimes feeling overwhelming. With continued use, familiarity will likely alleviate this issue.

In addition to using the touchscreen, which is highly responsive and quick to operate, inputs can also be made through a rotary dialler in the center console, steering wheel buttons, or voice commands using the “Hey BMW” feature. The overall design is sleek and enhanced by a clear and crisp display. However, there is a drawback in that the screen is heavily relied upon, serving as the central control hub for the M2.

Everything from climate controls (temperature and fan speed) to drive modes requires pressing, scrolling, swiping, and clicking on the 14.9-inch display. This level of accessibility may not be the most intuitive, especially when on the move. We have always advocated for physical dials and switches for climate functions, as they are easier to use, particularly while driving. It’s worth noting that there are individuals who believe in setting the temperature once and leaving it, but this perspective may not apply to those with partners who constantly alternate between “it’s too hot” and “it’s too cold” within minutes.

The driver display in the 12.3-inch size has been improved compared to previous versions. It can be customized according to personal preferences and includes some screens that are specific to the M model. When it comes to everyday driving, the setup is effective and provides clear driving data that can be adjusted in various ways. Additionally, M-specific features can be accessed through the infotainment screen. Among these features are a lap timer, which is useful on the track, and a Drift Analyzer that measures factors such as duration and angle before giving a rating out of five stars. It’s important to note that these features should only be used in appropriate settings and not on public roads. However, they are great for legal skidpan activities.

Is the BMW M2 a safe car?

ANCAP, Australia’s safety body, has not yet tested the BMW M2. Similarly, Euro NCAP has not conducted a specific test for the M2. However, it is important to note that the BMW 2 Series range, upon which the M2 is based, received a four-star rating (out of five) from Euro NCAP in 2022. This rating was determined by scoring 82 percent for adult occupant protection, 81 percent for child occupant protection, 67 percent for vulnerable road user protection, and 64 percent for its safety assistance systems. These last two scores contributed to the overall four-star rating of the 2 Series range.

What safety technology does the BMW M2 have?

The Driver Assistance package from BMW includes a variety of advanced features to enhance the driving experience. This package includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

For comprehensive insurance coverage, a 35-year-old male driver living in Chatswood, NSW can expect to pay approximately $3436 per year based on a comparative quote from a leading insurer. It is important to note that insurance costs may vary depending on factors such as location, driving history, and personal circumstances.

Does the BMW M2 have good fuel efficiency?

According to BMW, the M2 automatic has a fuel consumption rate of 9.7 liters per 100km during official testing. However, in real-world conditions, this figure may only be achievable if driving extremely gently, which is unlikely for an M2. During our test, we recorded a fuel consumption rate of 14.3 liters per 100km.

Is it worth buying a BMW M2?

The new M2 has definitely surpassed its predecessor by a significant margin. However, this hasn’t diminished what the original M2 represented: a high-performance M car that encapsulated the essence of the M tricolour on the boot lid and packed it into a compact and relatively affordable coupe. The latest version of the M2 continues in this tradition, and we would even argue that it’s an improvement over its predecessor. While it has grown in size, it has also gained in stature, becoming a more confident and engaging sports car that provides a sensory experience that future generations of drivers may struggle to comprehend. It’s important to note that this M2 will be the last of its kind, which is both a reason for celebration and a touch of sadness. BMW has promised that each new M car will be better than the previous one, but it’s hard to imagine how an electrified M2 could offer the same level of engagement, performance, and sheer driving pleasure.
