Overeview of the 2024 BMW X6
The X6 is here to complete what it started. The original X6 introduced a new SUV styling direction with its dramatically sloped roof, sacrificing some cargo space for the sake of coolness. It’s like an X5 SUV that hits the gym. Its athletic performance goes beyond its looks as well. The base engine is a peppy 375-horsepower turbocharged inline-six engine, providing the X6 with plenty of power.
The M60i, on the other hand, runs hotter with its 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 that’s built for high-speed driving. Both powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The 617-hp X6 M offers a more aggressive experience but will be reviewed separately. However, don’t let its focus on driving entertainment overshadow what the X6 truly offers. It spoils its passengers with a pleasantly elegant interior that includes an enormous infotainment screen, functioning as a high-tech command center. The X6 has even influenced other SUVs like the Porsche Cayenne Coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe to lower their rooflines, confirming that it was indeed the X6 that initiated the trend towards sleeker SUVs.
BMW has given the X6 a makeover for 2024, which includes a revamped front grille and bumper, new headlamps and taillamps, updated wheel designs, and a power boost for the base engine thanks to a new 48-volt hybrid system. The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine now produces 375 horsepower, while the power of the 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 remains unchanged for this year. The performance-oriented M60i, which has been renamed from last year’s M50i, features a more aggressive engine and comes with gloss-black exterior accents, quad tailpipes, and an M logo on the grille. Additionally, the X6 now offers the Highway Assistant hands-free driving feature, which we first experienced in the new 7-series flagship luxury sedan.

If you opt for the twin-turbo V-8-powered M60i xDrive, the efficiency drops to 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The thirstiest option is the high-horsepower X6 M Competition, which we will review separately. According to the EPA, it earns 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway. 40i | $74,895 |
M60i | $94,595 |
Despite the more powerful sounds and faster acceleration that the 523-hp X6 M60i offers, we do not believe it justifies the exorbitant price difference. Instead, we would opt for the six-cylinder X6 40i. We would choose the M Sport package, which includes a more stylish body kit and exterior trim, an enhanced exhaust system, a sportier suspension, and a distinctive steering wheel.
