A Comprehensive Review of the 2024 Kia Niro: A Game-Changer in the World of Electric Vehicles
The second-generation Niro hybrid was introduced for the 2023 model year, and Kia has not made any significant changes to its smallest SUV for 2024. The only modification to the Niro’s options sheet is the removal of Fire Orange Metallic paint for the SUV’s exterior.

Overeview 2024 Kia Niro
In addition to its city-friendly size and affordable starting price, the 2024 Kia Niro boasts fashionable and tasteful styling that is eye-catching. The entry-level Niro is powered by a 139-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, which is admittedly rather slow. However, if you desire more power, there is a plug-in hybrid version with 180 horsepower and an estimated 33-mile electric driving range. Inside, the Niro maintains its contemporary image with a chic cabin that matches the exterior.
Kia has incorporated sustainable materials, including upholstery and a headliner that includes eucalyptus leaves where possible. The Niro’s road manners are agreeable, although somewhat forgettable, but it feels right at home in urban environments. If you are considering an all-electric option, Kia also offers the Niro EV, which we review separately.

Design of the 2024 Kia Niro
The 2024 Kia Niro boasts a sleek and modern design that blends aerodynamics and aesthetics seamlessly. Its refined contours, sharp lines, and distinctive grille create a captivating presence on the road. The Niro’s compact size ensures maneuverability in urban environments while providing ample interior space for occupants and cargo. With its futuristic LED lighting and stylish alloy wheels, the 2024 Kia Niro is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.
Interior Comfort and Technology of the 2024 Kia Niro
Step inside the 2024 Kia Niro, and you’ll be greeted by a spacious, well-appointed cabin that exudes comfort and sophistication. The plush seating, high-quality materials, and ergonomic design ensure a pleasant driving experience for both the driver and passengers. The Niro offers ample headroom and legroom, making it suitable for long journeys.
In terms of technology, the 2024 Kia Niro leaves no stone unturned. It features a user-friendly infotainment system with a large touchscreen display, offering seamless connectivity through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The inclusion of advanced driver-assistance systems, such as lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control, ensures enhanced safety and convenience on the road.
A sculptural interior design creates a contemporary ambiance inside the Niro. Kia has incorporated recycled materials and natural fibers, like eucalyptus leaves, for the headliner and upholstery. While passenger space is cozy, it’s important to keep in mind that the Niro is a small crossover. Nonetheless, it provides ample room for four adults and a cargo area spacious enough for a large grocery run.
The inclusion of ambient interior lighting adds a touch of luxury, and the rotary shift knob resembles those found in Genesis luxury cars. In our testing, we were able to fit eight carry-on suitcases behind the Niro hybrid’s rear seats and 20 with the rear seats folded down. The Niro plug-in hybrid model had slightly less space due to its battery taking up some cargo room, but we still managed to fit six carry-ons behind the rear seats and 18 in total.
The Niro comes with a standard 8.0-inch touchscreen for its infotainment display, except for the base LX trim which is equipped with a larger 10.3-inch display. The larger display includes in-dash navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio. Both displays feature the latest version of Kia’s UVO infotainment system and support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX trims and above also include a wireless smartphone charging pad, while the SX and SX Touring trims upgrade to a seven-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system, replacing the standard six-speaker setup.
Driver-Centric Dual Displays
The Driver-Centric Dual Displays provide a center touchscreen interface for navigation, diagnostics, convenience, entertainment, and immersive vehicle information features.
Ample Legroom
The spacious cabin offers 41.5 inches of front legroom, ensuring a comfortable ride. Additionally, the Niro Hybrid boasts best-in-class rear legroom, with 39.8 inches. This is 7.8 inches more than the 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.
Ample Cargo Space
The Niro Hybrid offers an impressive 63.7 cu.ft of cargo space when the rear seats are folded flat, allowing you to pack more.
Connectivity
With the Kia Connect app, you can connect your compatible personal device or Apple Watch® to your vehicle. This allows you to remotely adjust cabin temperatures, monitor energy usage, and more. Additionally, wireless smartphone charging enables you to keep your compatible smartphone charged while on the go.
Thoughtful Design Elements
The Niro Hybrid features a sleek interior designed with partially recycled materials and Premium SynTex leather. This combination creates a captivating and comfortable environment for you to unwind in.
Performance of the 2024 Kia Niro
When it comes to performance, the 2024 Kia Niro truly shines. Powered by its electric drivetrain, the Niro delivers instant torque and a smooth acceleration that is characteristic of electric vehicles. The electric motor provides a generous amount of power while maintaining impressive efficiency.
The 2024 Kia Niro offers multiple driving modes that allow drivers to tailor their driving experience to their preferences. Whether you’re looking for a sporty ride or an eco-friendly approach, the Niro has you covered. Its regenerative braking system further enhances efficiency by capturing energy during deceleration and storing it for later use.
The Niro hybrid is powered by a 139-hp powertrain that consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. It comes with a standard six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and is only available with front-wheel drive. The plug-in hybrid version of the Niro adds a more powerful electric motor, resulting in a combined 180 horsepower. Neither model is particularly thrilling to drive, but the plug-in hybrid version offers quicker acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 7.3 seconds on our test track. In comparison, the standard hybrid takes a more leisurely 8.9 seconds to hit 60 mph.
The plug-in hybrid variant comes with an 11.1-kWh battery pack, which should be sufficient for approximately 33 miles of electric driving range per charge. Kia claims that when the car is connected to a Level 2 charger, the battery can be completely recharged in less than three hours. In our testing, the Niro plug-in hybrid was able to travel for 25 miles on electric power alone before needing to switch to the gas engine for additional range.
Safety and Efficiency of the 2024 Kia Niro
Safety is paramount in any vehicle, and Kia understands this well. The 2024 Kia Niro comes equipped with an array of advanced safety features to provide peace of mind on the road. Its comprehensive suite of safety technologies includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Additionally, the Niro incorporates a robust body structure and numerous airbags to protect occupants in the event of a collision. Its stability control system ensures optimal handling and traction in various driving conditions, adding an extra layer of safety.
One of the standout features of the 2024 Kia Niro is its exceptional efficiency. As an all-electric vehicle, it produces zero emissions while offering an impressive range on a single charge. The Niro’s battery can be charged at home using a standard wall outlet or through quick-charging stations for added convenience.
Kia has also equipped the 2024 Niro with regenerative braking technology, which recaptures energy during braking or coasting to replenish the battery. This feature maximizes efficiency and extends the range of the vehicle.
According to the EPA, the Niro hybrid has a rating of up to 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway, but this only applies to the base LX trim. All other trims are rated for 53 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. In our own 75-mph highway fuel economy test route, the Niro hybrid EX Touring achieved only 39 mpg, while the Niro plug-in hybrid returned 37 mpg in the same test. For more information about the Niro’s fuel economy, please visit the EPA’s website.
All Niro models come with a range of standard driver-assistance features, such as pedestrian-detection capabilities, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist. Additionally, an advanced adaptive cruise control system with lane-centering is available as an option. For more detailed information about the Niro’s crash test results, please visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features of the Niro include:
- Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Available adaptive cruise control with lane-centering feature
