Having enjoyed the Honda XL125S as a pioneer in my early teens, I had a pretty good idea of what to expect from the Honda CB125E in terms of performance and reliability. Of course, the performance is not spectacular, but the reliability and maintainability are very good. Honda has made several different 125cc air-cooled engines over the years, most of which are single overhead cams, but I am aware of at least one overhead valve engine of his. All of these engines put out around 7 to 11kW and have strong power in the low-mid range, but tend to run out of steam at high revs. The 7.6kW Honda CB125E stays true to its shape, with a tractable bottom end, strong midrange and a power taper past around 7000rpm. The CB125 doesn’t have a tachometer, so you have to drive by ear, but there are maximum shift points for each gear marked on the tachometer, and I believe these are calculated based on the engine’s redline. It is said that a good shift point is 22km/h in 1st gear, 44km/h in 2nd gear, 64km/h in 3rd gear, 84km/h in 4th gear, and 112km/h in 5th gear (top gear). This at least helps keep the engine from running to the redline.
Honda CB125 At the time of this writing, the fastest speed I’ve run my little Honda is around 105 km/h. I’m sure it will be faster with other drivers. No, it’s not a question of ability.At 190cm and 125kg, I’m neither small nor light, and with such a small engine, I can clearly see the change in power-to-weight ratio.
This is a commuter bike designed to get around town economically, and at urban speeds the Honda CB125 shines brighter. If you move forward between cars at a traffic light, you run the risk of being run over by a car behind you when the light changes. The CB125 is pretty nimble from the mark to his 70km/h and with my weight he easily reaches 80km/h. Above 80 km/h, the bike’s performance drops significantly. This is probably because maximum torque is reached at that speed and torque drops off from that point onwards. 90 km/h is possible, but going beyond that takes a bit of patience. On moderately sized hills, the speed drops rapidly to below 90 km/h. The bike is fairly quiet in town for a 4-stroke single, but I should add that it tends to vibrate above 90km/h. These vibrations are small and never a cause for concern, but can be felt through the seat and handlebars and can lead to rider fatigue on long rides (edit:
One of the most noticeable vibrations disappeared when I replaced the stock drive chain with an O-ring chain at 15,000 km). Some of that vibration is caused by the engine revving to absurd rpms at those speeds and could be something Honda addresses in the future. It is recommended to check that it is tight.
High-speed vibrations aside, the Honda CB125 rides comfortably and comfortably with its relatively low seat height and upright riding position, keeping your wrists at bay. Braking performance is pretty impressive, but you have to pull the lever hard to get maximum deceleration. This prevents learners from locking the front wheels in slippery situations if they panic. ABS is a $500 option on the CBR500R. A low seat height of 790mm and friendly ergonomics make the CBR500R’s perch a friendly place to be. Overall, we found the ergonomics to be fairly reasonable and comfortable, with passenger accommodations reasonable with convenient grab bars that can be removed and replaced with attractive rear seat trim for $182.
The instrumentation is extensive with all electronic displays including a red-ringed baton-style speedometer at 8500 rpm. A clear digital speedometer is centrally located next to the hour and kilometer displays. A segmented fuel gauge shows how much fuel is left in the spacious 15.7 liter tank. With a fuel consumption of less than 4.0 l/100 km according to official standards and a range of 400 km, you won’t have to go to gas stations often. The only thing missing from the instrument is a gear indicator.
The CBR500R is very competitively priced, combining great utility with first-class performance, promising low running costs. This makes a compelling case as the most practical all-around choice among current learning products.
