Overview of the 2024 GMC Canyon
The mid-size GMC Canyon is a mechanical counterpart of Chevy’s Colorado, and both strive to provide the power and capability of their full-size counterparts. These smaller trucks have even borrowed tools from the Sierra and Silverado 1500, which is where the Canyon’s 310-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine comes from.
The only transmission available is an eight-speed automatic, making the Jeep Gladiator and Toyota Tacoma the only mid-size trucks that offer a manual transmission. The Canyon’s interior differs from the Colorado’s with changes in instrument panel design, materials, and trim accents, all aimed at improving the cabin environment. Both brands’ trucks boast a segment-leading maximum towing capacity of 7700 pounds, as well as similar extreme off-road versions. The Canyon’s hardcore model is the AT4X AEV Edition.
After launching the new-generation mid-size Canyon in 2023, GMC has made no significant changes to most of the lineup. However, they have introduced a new max-capability AEV Edition model to their off-road AT4X trim. This edition includes exclusive 17-inch AEV wheels with imposing 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler MT tires, as well as additional and stronger skid plates and AEV steel bumpers. The AEV Edition also boasts a 1.5-inch increase in height compared to the regular AT4X, resulting in a total ground clearance of 12.2 inches.
Striking Design of the 2024 GMC Canyon
The 2024 GMC Canyon boasts a bold and aggressive design that instantly grabs attention. Its muscular body lines, prominent grille, and sleek LED headlights give it a commanding presence on the road. The redesigned front fascia and rear bumper add a touch of sophistication to its overall appeal. With various trims and customization options available, buyers can choose a Canyon that suits their style and preferences.

Powerful Engine Options of the 2024 GMC Canyon
Under the hood, the 2024 GMC Canyon offers a range of powerful engine options to cater to different needs. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that delivers 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque. For those seeking more power, there is an available 3.6-liter V6 engine that generates an impressive 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, there is a diesel option: a 2.8-liter turbocharged Duramax engine with 181 horsepower and an impressive 369 lb-ft of torque. These engine choices ensure that the 2024 Canyon has the capability to handle any task or adventure.
Every Canyon model is equipped with a 310-hp turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-four engine that delivers 430 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and rear-wheel drive comes as standard. However, we strongly recommend opting for the optional four-wheel drive. With this configuration, the Canyon offers more power and torque compared to the V-6 powertrains found in the Honda Ridgeline, Gladiator, and Toyota., like the Chevy Colorado, the Duramax has been discontinued, which is a shared drawback.
The Canyon boasts nicely weighted and a firm brake pedal that matches the characteristics of its solid-feeling chassis. In fact, in 2019, we referred to the previous generation of GM mid-size pickups as “the best-driving body-on-frame vehicle on sale today.” These new trucks, however, manage to improve upon that reputation. We had the opportunity to venture off-road in the AT4X AEV and found it to be an enjoyable and proper adventure. The experience was not marred by excessive road or tire noise while driving on highways that connect your favorite trailheads.
Although we have not yet conducted a test of the new Canyon, we anticipate that it will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just over 6.0 seconds.

Advanced Technology Features of the 2024 GMC Canyon
The 2024 GMC Canyon is equipped with a host of advanced technology features that enhance both convenience and safety. The available infotainment system comes with an intuitive touchscreen display, smartphone integration, and voice recognition capabilities. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility allow seamless connectivity with your favorite apps and music streaming services. The Canyon also offers optional driver-assistance features such as forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and rearview camera, ensuring a safe and confident driving experience.
Every Canyon comes with an 11.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, which allows for Wi-Fi hotspot capability and wireless compatibility with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Wireless phone charging is an option for the AT4 trim, but it is a standard feature for the Denali and AT4X trims. GM’s Hitch View and Hitch Guidance system, which simplifies the process of finding a trailer tongue, is included as a standard feature even on the entry-level Elevation trim. The 360-degree camera is only standard on the Denali and AT4X trims, but it can be added to the two lower trim levels for an additional cost.
Comfortable and Versatile Interior of the 2024 GMC Canyon
Step inside the 2024 GMC Canyon, and you’ll be greeted by a comfortable, well-appointed interior. The cabin is designed with high-quality materials and attention to detail, providing a premium feel. The seats are supportive and offer ample legroom for both front and rear passengers. The rear seats can be folded down to create additional cargo space when needed, making the Canyon a versatile companion for both work and play.
GMC has introduced much-needed technology to the interior of the Canyon. Available features include underbody cameras, a head-up display, and a complete redesign of the Canyon’s cabin, similar to the updates made to the new Colorado’s interior.
A new digital gauge cluster is now situated behind a redesigned steering wheel, and the gear shifter has been moved closer to the passenger side of the cab, creating space for the drive-mode selection knob. GMC has also relocated the cupholders to a deeper cubby, making them more accessible to both the driver and passenger. The AT4X trim includes a head-up display and a powerful seven-speaker Bose audio system. The Elevation and AT4 trims come with an 8.0-inch digital gauge cluster, while the Denali and AT4X trims feature a larger 11.0-inch display.
Exceptional Towing and Payload Capacity of the 2024 GMC Canyon
When it comes to hauling and towing, the 2024 GMC Canyon excels in its class. With a maximum towing capacity of up to 7,700 pounds (when properly equipped), the Canyon can effortlessly tow trailers, boats, or recreational vehicles. Its payload capacity is equally impressive, allowing you to carry heavy loads without compromising performance or stability. Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or tackling tough jobs at the worksite, the Canyon is up to the task.
The new GMC Canyon has a maximum towing capacity of 7700 pounds for the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trim levels. However, this rating decreases to 6000 pounds for the Canyon AT4X, and further drops to 5500 pounds when the AT4X is equipped with the Edition 1 package.
Off-Road Capability and Fuel Efficiency of the 2024 GMC Canyon
For those seeking off-road adventures, the 2024 GMC Canyon offers an available AT4 trim that brings exceptional off-road capability to the table. With features like a lifted suspension, off-road tires, skid plates, and an advanced four-wheel drive system, the Canyon AT4 is ready to conquer challenging terrains with ease. Whether you’re exploring rugged trails or navigating through muddy paths, this off-road variant of the Canyon ensures thrilling experiences without compromising on comfort or safety.
Despite its powerful engine options, the 2024 GMC Canyon doesn’t compromise on fuel efficiency. The base four-cylinder engine delivers an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, making it an economical choice for daily commuting or long road trips. The diesel engine option offers even greater fuel efficiency, with an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. These figures make the Canyon an excellent choice for those looking for both power and fuel economy.
The most fuel-efficient GMC Canyon is the rear-wheel drive Elevation model, which is estimated to get 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway by the EPA. For four-wheel drive models, the fuel efficiency is slightly lower, with an estimated 17 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. If equipped with mud-terrain tires, the Canyon pickups are estimated to get 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway. We will update this information once the Canyon has undergone our extensive testing regimen, which includes a 75-mph fuel-economy route.
Advanced Safety Features of the 2024 GMC Canyon
The safety of its occupants is a top priority for GMC, and the 2024 Canyon reflects this commitment by offering a range of advanced safety features. Along with the optional driver-assistance features mentioned earlier, the Canyon also comes equipped with standard safety features such as antilock brakes, stability control, and multiple airbags. These safety technologies work together to provide peace of mind on every journey.
GMC’s Canyon comes with a standard Pro Safety package that includes a list of driver-assistance features. To learn more about the Canyon’s crash-test results, you can visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Key safety features of the Canyon are expected to include standard forward:
- collision warning and automated emergency braking, standard lane.

Pricing of the 2024 GMC Canyon
Considerably more expensive than the Chevy it shares most parts with, the Canyon is aimed at those seeking something different from what the bowtie brand offers and are willing to pay for it. With that in mind, $50,000 is still a hefty sum for a mid-size pickup (Canyon Denali, we’re looking at you), so we would feel more comfortable recommending the Canyon AT4. This variant provides ample standard features like four-wheel drive, an 11.3-inch infotainment system, and a 2.0-inch lift, all for a much lower price than the Denali trim. The AT4 also includes heated front seats that can be manually adjusted, along with the convenient addition of remote start.
