Overview 2024 Dodge Hornet
If you’ve been eyeing the Alfa Romeo Tonale but need something more affordable, the 2024 Dodge Hornet offers a similar experience at a lower price. While the Dodge uses the same plug-in hybrid powertrain as the Alfa, it also comes in a nonhybrid version that produces 268 horsepower. Both powertrains come with standard all-wheel drive.
Compared to other compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Hornet’s cabin is a bit smaller, providing less space for passengers and cargo. However, the Hornet excels in its lively on-road performance. Dodge has also equipped every model with a generous range of standard features, including a digital gauge display, their latest infotainment interface, and a variety of driver-assistance features like automated emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
The plug-in hybrid R/T model joins the lineup this year, complete with a 288-hp powertrain that is expected to provide over 30 miles of electric-only driving range. In its second year on the market, we do not anticipate any other significant changes to the Hornet lineup for 2024.
Exterior Design of the 2024 Dodge Hornet
The 2024 Dodge Hornet boasts a truly captivating exterior design that sets it apart from its competitors. With its sleek lines, aggressive stance, and bold features, this compact car exudes an air of sportiness and sophistication. The front fascia is dominated by a distinctive grille, flanked by sleek LED headlights that give the Hornet a menacing look. The sculpted sides and aerodynamic profile further enhance its dynamic appeal. Additionally, the availability of vibrant color options adds a touch of personalization for potential buyers.
From its functional hood scoops and iconic wide stance to its performance-inspired and futuristic interior, the 2024 Dodge Hornet skillfully combines aggressive styling with modern amenities. The GT Plus and R/T Plus Performance Hybrid models feature a standard power sunroof with a power rolling sunshade and a spring-loaded front edge windjammer that reduces wind noise. Load up and roll out with ease. When your hands are full, the available hands-free power liftgate offers convenient entry. Simply kick your foot under the license plate to open it.

Interior Comfort and Technology of the 2024 Dodge Hornet
Step inside the 2024 Dodge Hornet, and you will be greeted by a well-crafted interior that combines functionality with premium comfort. The spacious cabin offers ample legroom and headroom for both the driver and passengers, making long journeys a breeze. The seats are designed with ergonomics in mind, providing excellent support even on extended drives.
In terms of technology, the Hornet leaves no stone unturned. The centerpiece of the dashboard is a large touchscreen infotainment system that seamlessly integrates with smartphones and offers a plethora of entertainment options. The inclusion of advanced connectivity features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensures that you stay connected while on the go. Furthermore, the car comes equipped with a premium audio system that delivers an immersive sound experience.
The cabin of the Hornet is just as roomy as the Tonale’s, which means it is spacious for front-seat passengers but tight for those in the back. The interior styling is also similar to the Tonale’s, with the primary controls and infotainment system slightly tilted towards the driver and a tall shift lever for the automatic transmission positioned on the center console. The Hornet also uses the same steering wheel as the Alfa Romeo, although it features a Dodge logo in the center, and it has an integrated ignition switch beneath the left spoke. Standard upholstery is black with red stitching, but the GT Plus trim comes with leather, and those who opt for the Track package get faux-suede. Additionally, there is an optional red leather interior available.
All models are equipped with a 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge display. The software interface is the latest Uconnect 5 system, which is also used in other Stellantis models like the Chrysler Pacifica minivan and the Ram 1500 pickup truck. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard features, as well as Amazon Alexa connectivity. Upgrading to the GT Plus model replaces the standard audio system with a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo and adds a wireless smartphone charging pad.
Performance and Handling of the 2024 Dodge Hornet
When it comes to performance, the 2024 Dodge Hornet does not disappoint. Under the hood, you’ll find a range of powerful engine options that cater to different driving preferences. Whether you opt for the fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine or the high-performance turbocharged variant, the Hornet offers a thrilling driving experience.
The car’s responsive transmission and precise handling make maneuvering through city streets or winding roads effortless. With its nimble chassis and well-tuned suspension system, the Hornet strikes a perfect balance between comfort and agility. Additionally, advanced safety features such as traction control and stability control ensure a secure ride in varied driving conditions.
The Hornet GT models are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 268 horsepower. It is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. During our initial test drive, we found the Hornet GT to be quite lively, and we estimate that this powertrain is sufficient to propel the Hornet to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.
On the other hand, the R/T model is Dodge’s first plug-in hybrid. It is equipped with a turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, which together generate 288 horsepower. Unlike the GT, the R/T comes with a six-speed automatic transmission but still has all-wheel drive as standard. The powertrain can temporarily increase output by 30 horsepower through a feature called PowerShot, which is activated by pulling both paddle shifters. With the PowerShot mode engaged, the Hornet R/T Plus PHEV achieved a 0-60 mph time of 5.5 seconds at our test track, matching the Alfa Romeo Tonale’s time in the same test. This is not surprising since the two vehicles are essentially identical, except that the Alfa does not rely on the gimmicky PowerShot feature to achieve its maximum horsepower.
In urban areas, the Hornet R/T (and by extension, the Tonale) feels lively, even when running on electric power alone. The handling is confident and has a sporty feel, but it is not as athletic or satisfying as what you would find in competitors from Mazda or Volkswagen.

Fuel Efficiency of the 2024 Dodge Hornet
With rising fuel costs and environmental concerns, fuel efficiency has become a crucial factor for many car buyers. The 2024 Dodge Hornet addresses this concern by offering excellent fuel economy across its engine lineup. The four-cylinder engine variants deliver impressive mileage both in city traffic and on highways, making it an ideal choice for daily commuting or long-distance travel.
Additionally, the Hornet incorporates advanced engine technologies such as direct fuel injection and start-stop functionality to optimize fuel consumption without compromising performance. This focus on efficiency makes the car not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly.
The R/T model, which is a plug-in hybrid, is equipped with a 12.0-kWh battery pack that can provide 33 miles of electric driving on a single charge. During our fuel economy test on a highway with a speed limit of 75 mph, we were able to drive for 31 miles solely using electric power before the Hornet’s gas engine engaged. It took approximately two and a half hours to recharge the battery using a level 2 charger.
