Overeview of GMC Sierra 2024
The GMC Sierra 2024 is a standout truck in its class, offering a powerful performance, advanced technology features, and impressive towing capabilities. Whether you’re an off-road enthusiast or someone who needs a reliable truck for everyday tasks, the Sierra delivers on all fronts. With its bold design, comfortable interior, and safety features, the GMC Sierra 2024 is truly a truck for the modern adventurer.
GMC Sierra HD pickups can tow an enormous amount of weight, but their impressive capabilities don’t end there. These powerful workhorses also have a polished appearance, with shiny chrome exterior accents and a comfortable leather interior. The Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD models are larger versions of the Sierra 1500, which is reviewed separately. Compared to Chevy’s Silverado HD offerings, these GMC pickups offer a higher level of luxury and refinement.
The base powertrain for the Sierra HD is a 6.6-liter V8 engine with 401 horsepower and a 10-speed automatic transmission. However, for the maximum conventional towing capacity of 22,500 pounds, you’ll need to opt for the available 470-hp Duramax turbodiesel V8 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Sierra HD also comes with additional trailer assist features such as Transparent Trailer View, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and optional adaptive cruise control with trailering, which make towing easier and more efficient.
Although the heavy-duty Sierra falls short in terms of polish and maximum towing capabilities compared to competitors like the Ram HD and Ford Super Duty, it is still a solid choice for those who have a strong desire for a truck of this size.
Engine Options of GMC Sierra 2024:
The GMC Sierra 2024 offers a range of powerful engine options to suit different driving needs. Whether you’re looking for raw power or fuel efficiency, there’s an engine option for you. Here are the available engines:
- 6.2L V8 Engine: This engine delivers an impressive 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, providing ample power for towing and hauling heavy loads.
- 3.0L Turbo-Diesel Engine: For those seeking fuel efficiency without compromising on power, this engine is a great choice. It generates 277 horsepower and an impressive 460 lb-ft of torque.
- 5.3L V8 Engine: This engine option strikes a balance between power and efficiency, offering 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The Sierra HD comes standard with a gas-powered 6.6-liter V-8 that produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and is available in rear- or four-wheel drive. The optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 produces 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, and it is equipped with an Allison-certified 10-speed automatic transmission. For the 3500 HD models, you can choose between a single- or dual-rear-wheel axle (known as a “dually”).
Although we have only driven an earlier diesel version, we have sampled the gas-burning powertrain on the Chevy Silverado 2500HD, which is internally identical to the Sierra HD, and we appreciated its dutiful performance. However, there is no denying that the Duramax engine is a standout feature of the heavy-duty Sierra, making it a clear choice for those who regularly tow heavy loads. The engine is surprisingly refined, and the transmission is very responsive. Together, they helped the 2500HD Denali that we tested achieve impressively quick acceleration times.
Despite its size, the GMC Sierra also offers a comfortable ride quality for its class. Although its steering can feel vague at highway speeds, the Sierra still feels more agile than its heavy-duty competitors. The trail-ready AT4 and AT4X models offer a more rugged take on the typically chrome-laden truck, featuring an off-road suspension and a locking rear differential, along with a blacked-out aesthetic.
Exterior Design of GMC Sierra 2024:
The GMC Sierra 2024 boasts a bold and commanding presence on the road. Its strong lines, muscular fenders, and aggressive front grille make a statement wherever it goes. The Sierra’s signature C-shaped LED headlights and LED taillights not only enhance visibility but also add to its distinctive look. Additionally, the available Denali trim level offers premium features like chrome accents and unique styling cues that elevate the truck’s appearance.
GMC’s toughest pickup receives a minor visual update along with significant changes such as an improved powertrain that provides greater towing capacity and a brand new trim. The Sierra HDs now feature a redesigned front fascia with newly available LED headlights and taillights featuring sequential turn signals. The 6.6-liter Duramax turbocharged diesel V-8 engine now generates 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque, resulting in increased towing capacity across the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD lineup. The maximum rating at the hitch is now 22,500 pounds. The 401-hp 6.6-liter V-8 gas engine’s six-speed automatic transmission has been replaced by the Allison-certified 10-speed automatic, which was previously exclusive to the diesel engine. Additionally, the lineup now includes a new Denali Ultimate trim for the 2500HD and 3500HD models, offering an even higher level of luxury than the popular Denali tier.
The Denali Ultimate features leather-wrapped door panels, steering wheel, and A- and B-pillar handles. The 16-way power-adjustable front seats, which are heated and cooled and include massage functionality, are now adorned with intricate leather stitching featuring a topographic map of Mount Denali in Alaska. These updates are complemented by new trailering technology, including adaptive cruise control with trailering, gross combination weight (GCW) alert, and GM’s Transparent Trailer View, which is now compatible with gooseneck and fifth wheel trailering. Furthermore, the standard driver assistance technology for the Sierra HD has been expanded for the 2024 model year. In addition to the AT4X off-road trim, there is also an AEV Edition available, which comes with steel bumpers, AEV 18-inch wheels, and reinforced skid plates.

Interior Comfort and Space of GMC Sierra 2024:
Step inside the GMC Sierra 2024, and you’ll find a spacious and well-appointed cabin designed with both comfort and functionality in mind. The available leather upholstery and premium materials create a luxurious feel, while the ergonomic layout of controls ensures everything is within easy reach of the driver.
Passenger comfort is a priority in the Sierra, with ample legroom and headroom in both the front and rear seats. The rear seats can also be folded up to reveal additional storage space, perfect for carrying larger items.
Inside, the Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD feature a spacious dashboard with user-friendly controls. Most models offer a split-folding front bench that can be replaced with bucket seats and a center console. Additional optional features for the Sierra’s interior include a head-up display, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and wireless charging.
However, the quality of the cabin’s panel fit and materials is mediocre at best. While there are soft-touch surfaces throughout and durable plastics in most models, the top-of-the-line Denali trim falls short of its luxury reputation. The new Denali Ultimate trim offers a more luxurious experience with leather-wrapped interior pieces, Paldao wood trim, and a soft microsuede headliner. In comparison, the fanciest options from Ram overshadow the GMC due to their more upscale appearance and feel.
Nevertheless, the Sierra HD will satisfy pickup truck buyers who value practicality and versatility. The crew cab offers ample passenger space, and the GMC is equipped with convenient interior storage compartments. Both the standard and long cargo boxes have built-in steps on each side and at each corner of the rear bumper. The cargo box can be further customized with LED lighting, movable tie-downs, and a 120-volt outlet. The standout feature of the heavy-duty Sierra is its innovative multi-function tailgate, which offers six different positions including a work surface and bench. It’s a tailgater’s dream come true.
Advanced Technology Features of GMC Sierra 2024:
The GMC Sierra 2024 is equipped with a host of advanced technology features that enhance both convenience and safety. Here are some notable features:

- ProGrade Trailering System: If you frequently tow trailers or boats, the ProGrade Trailering System will be a game-changer. It includes features like trailer sway control, hitch guidance with hitch view, and an integrated trailer brake controller to make towing easier and safer.
- Driver Assistance Features: The GMC Sierra 2024 offers a range of driver assistance features, such as forward collision alert, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. These features provide an extra layer of safety on the road.
Enhanced Off-Road Capability of GMC Sierra 2024:
For those who love off-roading adventures, the GMC Sierra 2024 has got you covered. With its available X31 Off-Road Package, the Sierra gets upgraded with features specifically designed for off-road excursions. This package includes all-terrain tires, Rancho shocks, skid plates, a heavy-duty air filter, and a dual exhaust system for enhanced performance off the beaten path.
Building on the foundation of the redesigned 2024 Sierra HD, which features updated design elements, new premium interiors, and a tech-focused layout, the new Sierra HD AT4X offers several notable features:
- A maximum trailering capacity of 18,500 pounds^1
- A factory-installed 1.5-inch (38mm) suspension lift
- Multimatic DSSV dampers
- Rear e-locking differential
- 35-inch Goodyear Territory tires
- Specific front upper and lower control arms and steering knuckles
- Larger steel transfer case skid plate and front aluminum skid plate
- Unique Obsidian Rush interior with premium appointments like massaging, full-grain leather-wrapped front seats
Additionally, the Sierra HD AT4X includes a new Off-Road Mode. When activated, this mode adjusts various vehicle calibrations, including anti-lock brakes, traction control, and stability control, to optimize performance when driving off-road. It also modifies throttle progression and transmission shifts to enhance off-road control and performance.
Towing and Payload Capacity of GMC Sierra 2024:
The GMC Sierra 2024 is built to handle demanding towing and hauling tasks. With its robust construction and powerful engines, it offers impressive towing capacity. Depending on the engine option and configuration, the Sierra can tow up to 11,800 pounds when properly equipped.
In terms of payload capacity, the Sierra can handle up to 2,280 pounds, allowing you to carry heavy loads with ease.
Unleashing the Beast: A Comprehensive Review of the 2024 Ram TRX
The most powerful Sierra 3500HD is capable of towing up to 36,000 pounds. However, in order to achieve this impressive capacity, it requires the diesel engine, regular cab, rear-wheel drive, dual-rear-wheel axle, and a gooseneck hitch. If equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch instead, the towing capacity drops to 32,000 pounds. On the other hand, the Sierra 2500HD only comes with a single-rear-wheel axle, and its most robust version can tow up to 22,500 pounds.
Safety Features of GMC Sierra 2024:
Safety is a top priority in the GMC Sierra 2024. In addition to the aforementioned driver assistance features, the Sierra also comes equipped with a comprehensive array of safety features to protect you and your passengers. Some notable safety features include:
- HD Surround Vision: This feature provides a bird’s-eye view of the truck’s surroundings, making it easier to navigate tight spaces or maneuver in crowded areas.
- Rear Camera Mirror: The rear camera mirror replaces the traditional rearview mirror with a high-definition camera feed, providing an unobstructed view of what’s behind you.
- Automatic Emergency Braking: The Sierra can detect potential collision risks and automatically apply the brakes if necessary to help mitigate or prevent accidents.
Pricing and Availability of GMC Sierra 2024
We would start with the crew cab and choose the standard bed on the Sierra 2500HD. We would avoid the rugged AT4 and chrome-laden Denali models, despite their enhanced appearance. Instead, we recommend selecting the SLT trim level and adding four-wheel drive and the diesel V-8. The SLT comes standard with GMC’s versatile MultiPro tailgate, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, power-adjustable front seats, and remote start. It also offers more options than the lesser SLE trim.
We would choose the SLT Convenience package, which includes front bucket seats with ventilated cushions, heated rear seats, and a power-sliding rear window. Adding the Driver Alert packages is also worth considering because they make the behemoth easier to live with, thanks to assists such as blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and front and rear parking sensors.
