Renault Clio – the French icon car
2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Renault Clio, the French supermini that has been one of the most successful models ever sold in Europe.
With over 15 million units produced since its first version hit the market in 1990, Clio remains an emblem of the small car segment that attracts a lot of attention from European consumers. Its existence also testifies to the long history of the French automaker.
Renault Clio I
Designed as a replacement for the highly successful Renault 5, the first-generation Clio was introduced at the 1990 Paris Motor Show.
In 1991, the car model won the title of Car of the Year in Europe, with experts considering it the best new car introduced on the continent thanks to its “impressive design, quality, spacious cabin, and unprecedented equipment for a small-sized car.”
The 1.4-liter variant of the Renault Clio is equipped with remote central locking, electric adjustable sunroof, radio, and cassette stereo. Other versions include the 1.2-liter three-door diesel engine, 1.9-liter, 1.8-liter with a 16-valve RSi engine, and the Clio Williams with a 2-liter, 148 horsepower engine.
Renault Clio II
The production of the Clio I ended in 1998 when Renault introduced the Clio II. With a new design and larger legroom, the cabin is more spacious, seats are bigger, and the suspension system is adjusted for comfort.
By using new materials, the weight of the car has been reduced, with certain parts such as the hood made of aluminum, the front mudguard made of composite, and the headlight cover made of polycarbonate. The Clio is the first subcompact car equipped with front airbags and ABS, and it also comes with seatbelt pretensioners and power steering. The engine options include 1.2, 1.4, and 1.6-liter petrol engines, as well as a 1.9-liter diesel engine option. The sporty Clio RS version produces up to 170 horsepower. The new 1.6-liter 16-valve petrol engine was introduced in 2000, and later versions were upgraded with 16-valve engines for improved performance and fuel efficiency.
In 2000, the second generation Clio was updated with revised instrument cluster and passenger airbags as standard. In 2001, Renault added more features such as new bumpers, optional xenon headlights, digital display air conditioning system and GPS, and introduced a new 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine option. In the same year, the Clio V6 Renault Sport, a rear-wheel drive model with a mid-mounted 3.0-liter engine sourced from the Laguna factory, producing 226 horsepower, was introduced. Various styling changes were implemented from inside out in 2004, and the Clio RS received a power boost to 179 horsepower and two chassis options, standard and Cup.
Renault Clio III
In 2005, the Clio II was replaced by the Clio III. The latest version came with a sleeker design, improved interior quality, enhanced cabin space, and more features. The car featured a smart key and push-button start, along with a new GPS system and active cruise control with speed limit function.
The third generation Clio is the first supercar to achieve a five-star Euro NCAP rating thanks to its advanced active and passive safety features. A new version called the Sport Tourer, with a longer wheelbase than the regular hatchback, was also introduced for this launch, and a new Renault Sport variant was released with a power output of up to 197 horsepower. The Clio III was named European Car of the Year in 2006.
Renault Clio IV
Inspired by the DeZir concept and designed by Laurens van den Acker, the Clio IV was introduced in 2012 with a larger wheelbase than its predecessor, as well as new design and technology features such as the R-Link touchscreen infotainment system and full LED headlights.
The engine lineup includes the regular TCe petrol and dCi diesel, while the Clio RS version comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine producing 197 horsepower and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Renault Clio V

Inside, there’s a slightly more high-tech cabin with a digital instrument display as standard, and the central touchscreen infotainment system offers a few extra features. Once again, the Esprit Alpine steals the show with its sportier cabin that includes flashy upholstery and red, white, and blue stitching.
As for the engine options, the Clio still offers the same range as before, with the addition of the E-Tech 145 Full Hybrid option alongside the small TCe 90 petrol engine. Both options are powered by petrol, but the E-Tech combines the 1.6-liter engine with the same electric motor and six-speed automatic gearbox found in the Captur and Arkana SUVs.
Although Renault has made some changes to the car’s specification, there have been no updates to the suspension or chassis. This means that the Clio is just as enjoyable to drive as before, with some of the best handling characteristics in its class, while still providing a comfortable and supple ride.

If you choose the TCe 90 engine, the acceleration time increases to over 12 seconds, although it is still reasonably quick.
Regardless of the engine you choose, the Clio is surprisingly enjoyable to drive. While French cars are often known for their comfort rather than their sportiness, the Clio is an exception to this rule. It may not be as sharp as the now-discontinued Fiesta, but it has meaty steering and good body control, making it nimble in corners. However, this does come at a cost. The Clio has a slightly firmer ride compared to, for example, the Citroen C3, although it never becomes excessively uncomfortable or harsh. It is worth noting that we have not yet tested a basic Clio with the smaller 16-inch alloy wheels, which may provide a slightly smoother ride over potholes. However, for the more high-end models, there is definitely a sporty element to the ride, even if it is not as firm as that of a “hot” hatchback.

People who are over six feet tall will struggle with headroom, and unless you are only carrying children, using all three back seats at once is out of the question.
