Overview of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata
The Hyundai Sonata brings some attitude to the family-sedan segment that we hope is loud enough to stand out. Its mid-cycle refresh includes updated front and rear bumpers, new headlights and taillights, as well as significant changes to the interior. While the Sonata keeps its current powertrains—a 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 180-hp turbocharged four, and an N Line model with a 290-hp turbo four—all-wheel drive is now an option for cars with the 2.5-liter four. The 195-hp Sonata Hybrid, which delivers impressive fuel economy numbers, remains part of the lineup. While the Sonata’s road manners don’t impress us as much as the Honda Accord’s, its high style quotient and value-oriented packaging make it a great choice among family sedans nonetheless.
Hyundai has given the Sonata a refresh for 2024. The funky daytime running lights that used to run parallel to the hood are gone, replaced with different funky daytime running lights that span the width of the front bumper. The rear bumper cover and taillights have also been redesigned, but the most significant update can be found within. There are now two 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreens fitted to a single curved display mount. The steering wheel also has a different look, with the gear selector moved from the center console to a knob sprouting from the steering column. On the mechanical front, all-wheel drive is now an option, but only for cars with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder.

The 2024 Hyundai Sonata exudes a captivating blend of sophistication and sportiness, with its sleek lines and dynamic contours. The front fascia is adorned with a cascading grille, seamlessly integrated with the LED headlights to create an imposing presence on the road. The aerodynamic silhouette not only enhances the car’s visual appeal but also contributes to its fuel efficiency and handling prowess.
Just like what Korean car company Hyundai previously revealed, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata has a new Sensuous Sportiness design language with a modern, futuristic appearance.
If like before, the car’s grille cluster would be expanded and stand out in the center of the car’s front. However, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata has a revised grille, painted glossy black with large air vents on both sides.
The lighting system of the Hyundai Sonata 2024 uses LED technology adapted to the high-end version and lowers to create a light cavity. Meanwhile, the car’s navigation light strip across the bonnet is new.
The front bumper of the Hyundai Sonata 2024 has a slim, bright chrome-plated design, separated from the air cavity right above by a glossy black painted detail hidden deep inside.
Moving to the sides, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata impresses with two parallel lines extending from the A-pillar to the end of the D-pillar of the car.
Hyundai Sonata 2024 door handles and rearview mirrors are the same color as the car, the car mirrors have an electric adjustment/folding function with integrated turn signals and are designed to separate from the A-pillar.
Hyundai Sonata 2024 is equipped with a set of 17-inch, 5-spoke alloy wheels with unique 2-color scratch milling. The N Line version has 19-inch multi-spoke wheels with a unique N Line logo.
Just like the front of the car, the rear of the Hyundai Sonata 2024 and H-shaped LED taillights along with fancy dash details and attractive LED light strips extending the rear of the car.
In addition, the rear of the Hyundai Sonata 2024 has alternating glossy black painted details and a large embossed SONATA logo placed on the luggage compartment lid.
The rear bumper of the Hyundai Sonata 2024 is quite large, painted black, with chrome-plated faux exhaust pipes combined with impressive brake lights on both sides. As for the N Line version, it has a pair of sports exhaust pipes, increasing the health of the car. .
The appearance of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata is truly groundbreaking compared to before, giving this D-class sedan a sporty style.
Performance and Handling of the 2024 Hyundai Sonata
Under the hood, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata offers a range of powertrains to cater to diverse driving preferences. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers a robust performance, generating ample horsepower and torque while maintaining commendable fuel economy. For those seeking an extra dose of exhilaration, the available 1.6-liter turbocharged engine provides an adrenaline-inducing driving experience, complemented by responsive handling and precise steering.
A wide variety of powertrains are available for the Sonata, starting with a 192-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and culminating in a 290-hp turbo four. While most models are front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive is available with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The Sonata is not the sharpest handler in its class—we prefer the Accord and the Nissan Altima—but it’s still composed and responsive on the road. The ride is a little more unsettled than we’d like and firmer than most cars in this category, but the Sonata is at least reasonably quick with its turbocharged 1.6-liter engine. During our testing, a Sonata with that powertrain reached 60 mph in 7.1 seconds—an acceptable result in this class.
The shifts from the eight-speed automatic are smooth and well-timed. We’d also like to commend Hyundai for continuing to offer a conventional automatic transmission in its family sedan. Much of the class has switched to droning (but efficient) continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVTs). During our time with the Sonata hybrid, which pairs a turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a motor-generator that combines for 192 horsepower, we appreciated its fuel-saving efforts but disliked how it didn’t smoothly transition between gas and electric power sources. The 290-hp N Line is one of the quickest front-drive cars we’ve tested, and it provides a satisfying amount of driving verve. The N Line reached 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds, which is only a tenth slower than the Honda Civic Type R’s time.
The Sonata offers a selection of highly fuel-efficient powertrains, with the hybrid versions achieving the highest estimates. The Blue hybrid is rated at up to 50 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway; other hybrid Sonatas are expected to achieve 45 and 51 mpg, respectively. The hybrid we tested on our 75-mph fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, matched its 51-mpg-highway rating. We also tested Sonata models with the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine (36 mpg) and the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine (33 mpg). For more information about the Sonata’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.
In an era where environmental consciousness is paramount, the 2024 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a beacon of eco-friendliness. The available hybrid powertrain option exemplifies Hyundai’s dedication to sustainability without compromising performance. The hybrid variant seamlessly combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor, delivering impressive fuel efficiency while reducing carbon emissions, thereby appealing to environmentally conscious drivers.
